The swindling of Sand and soil

My article written in the year 2012:  Sounds to be still relevant…

The sand mining problem is getting worrisome for the people in villages on banks of Cauvery & Coleroon (Kollidam) rivers. The suffering people don't have an outlet/avenue to express.

Bloody politicians including the so called "fighter" Vaiko don't open their mouth for such crimes. Rivers are being raped in the name of sand mining and reaching a point of no return. Wonder what people would do with homes & high rises without rivers, water, agriculture and food. Saddening to see no real work from Delta leaders such as GK Vasan also.

You should take opinion of environmental scientists (not NGO's & freelancers) to emphasise the grave nature of the situation and future of agriculture in the erstwhile composite Thanjavur district now consisting of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur & Nagapattinam districts a.k.a RICE BOWL OF TAMIL NADU.

Already, price of premium quality Rice like Ponni, Sona Masuri & Bapatla (BPT 5204) has gone up from less than Rs.25 three months back to Rs.36 today. Andhra Govt has already banned movement of Rice outside their state Borders over last few months. Shortfall of rains in Karnataka this monsoon is grave. Andhra, Karnataka & TN are prime producers of these good quality south Indian rice varieties and even Kerala depends on rice supply from these states only and so are the millions of NRI's.

When one bad season can change the situation topsy-turvy for the STAPLE CROP of half a billion Indians, imagine what would be the consequences for future generations if the waterways for whole of three main delta districts are mismanaged by letting these mafia operate.

High Court has banned sand mining elsewhere. So, all the vehicle from districts such as Karur are here on the banks of Cauvery from Trichy to Kumbakonam along Kallanai, Thirukkattupalli, Thiruvaiyaru, Kabisthalam making a mess of people's lives. I had tweeted some sample pictures on friday and even Dinamani had published an article yesterday.

Instead of me explaining it, If you were to send a team to criss cross this stretch over a 24 hour cycle with cameras, you would understand the gravity of the situation. Stories of the number of loads as given out by govt is nowhere near reality. I am not bringing out political names involved because this isn't political but a policy problem. The TN govt has to change the policy altogether even if it were to slow down construction and real estate for the time being. Long term vision is essential.

Added to sand mining is brick industry on banks of rivers that eat up the most fertile TOP-SOIL. Top-soil is something we learnt in school days. We never knew the importance. Wikipedia has a beautiful explanation. In the name of brick making, they are removing the most fertile layer forever. Pls emphasise hard. There is nothing personal for me in this. Hope you would do a hard hitting story for our people. Vegetables & flowers are grown on these river banks. It shows how fertile the river bank soil is. I can help you go around the lands where small farmers grow flowers and live a prosperous life. Everything is in jeopardy with poor policy and/or lack of regulation.

Pls take inputs from people like MS Swaminathan & other recognised technocrats so that your message will have national reach.

Even in a highly reclusive country like Myanmar they have strong regulations such that one can't even build a house inside a farm. Here soil & sand are mined & sold to make the land mass graves for our future generations.
